INFORMATION SHEET - LOG SHELLS

Jefferson Log Homes deals specifically with handcrafted, scribe-fit structures. A handcrafted log home is not a manufactured log home. The characteristics of a handcrafted log home are green or standing dead logs that are peeled of their bark and then scribe-fit by hand – (for round logs)* - in their full round shape, at the corner notches and along the full horizontal length to the log below it. (Square Logs)** – are hand-hewned with a dovetail notch and chinked. The logs are generally 12 - 14 inches in diameter (round) and 12 to 36 inches on the face of a square log.

The reason for large diameter logs is insulation. Wood as a building material is 1.2 R per cubic inch. The thinner the width of wood, the less insulation and thermal mass. This may not be a problem if you are: a) increasing the insulation in the floor and ceiling, b) building a summer home, or c) in a temperate climate.  As a precaution, check your local building code to see what R-values are required for roof, floors, and walls in your area. The handcrafted method of log building assists to keep the natural, sometimes rustic look, of the wood due to the variety and natural imperfections of each log.  One of the unique features of log homes is that they are crafted at the log building yard, dissembled and trucked to the permanent location, then reassembled by us or a builder in your area.

Protection of Logs

Before shipment of a shell, we treat each log with a borate fungicide and insecticide. This formula is completely odorless, environmentally friendly and requires just one application for the life of the home. It destroys fungi that cause wood rot and kills wood-destroying insects.
